3G or 4G?
Spectrum allocation and management is the most contentious issue dogging the Indian telecom. Heated debate over the past two years has failed to resolve the issue and this has considerably delayed the launch of 3G services in India. The question is not "whether 3G can be ushered in without adequate allocation of spectrum", but also "how", "how much" and "to whom"? These were the kind of discussions in 3G India summit in Sept. 2006.
While Indian telecomm regulators and 2G service providers are fighting and debating over the whos and hows of 3G, there are players like Aircel who have launched WiMax services.
In the wireless world, voice providers are trying their best to also provide data services viz: Internet via a cell phone. On the other hand, wireless data technologies like Wifi/WiMax are on their way to provide voice with the VOIP technology with something like skype phones. Now there actually is almost no difference to the end user how he gets voice - through a cellular (GSM or CDMA or 3G) network or a data communications network (Wifi, WiMax...)
So, isn't India a little too late in launching the 3G services? Shouldn't they concentrate on what is beyond 3G. Ya, 4G is beyond 3G. But it is still not well defined as to what is 4G. I think India have a very good chance of actually defining 4G. If India adopts a certain technology, every operator, equipment manufacturer, technology provider will shift their attention to the India adopted technology and that is what would become 4G.

Hi Deepshikha,
My name is Mayank and I waz reading thru your blog about 3G or 4G. It was quite nice to read thru it as I also belong to same background as u and have recently completed my MS frm UK.
I just wanted to point out a few things here:
1. India is currently using 2.5G and not 2G in GSM as you have pointed out in the blog.
2. WiMax is a standard more than a technology which only specifies that the last mile connectivity for a wireless connection such that a high data rate can be achieved.
3. About implemeting 3G or 4G I am not sure. With 4G right now on drawing boards and without IEEE or any other agency approval for global implementation, I can not see India implementing it right now and then driving the industry to implement it.
Though I would like to point out that these are my personal views.
Hi Mayank,
Thanks for your comments. I agree with a few things you say and would like to respond to a few.
1. India is currently using 2.5G and not 2G in GSM as you have pointed out in the blog.
-- Completely agree. India does use 2.5G
2. WiMax is a standard more than a technology which only specifies that the last mile connectivity for a wireless connection such that a high data rate can be achieved.
-- WiMax is a common name for the 802.16d standard. .16e is more commonly called mobile WiMax. So I think I was talking about Mobile WiMax which has also been standardized in the IEEE802. It can solve the last mile problem but I do not think is limited to that. WiFi is being provided in Mountain View, California by Google for city wide connectivity - free of cost. So WiMax can definitely do better. With VoIP we might forget all about 2G and 3G.
3. About implemeting 3G or 4G I am not sure. With 4G right now on drawing boards and without IEEE or any other agency approval for global implementation, I can not see India implementing it right now and then driving the industry to implement it.
--Yes, 4G is on the drawing board. So is why India can actually adopt one technology and I believe, it might be called the 4G. The LAN groups are trying to provide mobility and voice. The celluar group are trying to provide high speed data. So all new standards point to the same - wireless high speed voice and data communications.
What do you say?
hey,
Quite nice but still I do not agree with few things:
1. WiFi is being provided in Mountain View, California by Google for city wide connectivity - free of cost. So WiMax can definitely do better. With VoIP we might forget all about 2G and 3G.
-- Wi- fi and WiMax are a completely different ball games in all. From whatever little reading, I have done on these topics I can say that Wi- fi is being used quite an extent through out the world but the problem with it is that the last mile connectivity is thru DSL links/ PSTN etc which has led to the connectivity/ bandwidth problems and have not matched the theoretical standards. At this point Wi- Max is said to help with providing wireless links and all between the hotspots and access points. Ya I also agree that Wi- Max once implemented would be more than a standard but right now in its development stages theoretically it is anticipated to prove a connectivity of 70 MBPS upto a distance of 70 miles if i am not wrong. Still theretical and practical aspects never match and we do not kno wat the future holds. So lets see and hope for the best.
2. So is why India can actually adopt one technology and I believe, it might be called the 4G. The LAN groups are trying to provide mobility and voice. The celluar group are trying to provide high speed data. So all new standards point to the same - wireless high speed voice and data communications.
-- I also agree with it but still implementing 4G in India seems distant dream for me and that too as the first country in the world to do so. Seeeing the present market scenario and the difficulties faced in implemeting 3G, I can not foresee India implementing 4G in the near future. With TRAI acting as a big daddy and no autonomy to the different service providers in India, I do not think how will india do that though the country is being projected as a technical hub and all. Here in UK I find the situation quite better than India with all service providers- BT/ Orange/ O2 etc given autonomy to decide on their policies and technologies. Here the consumer drives the market and not govt. agencies. I feel India can only come up to this standard only if the govt control is reduced.
Whatsay.
I will cover this in more detail as a full blog. let me know your email or something where I can write to you. Or else you can keep checking!
